Reading Permit Activity and Investment Trends

Once you've picked an area, BuildSignal shows three connected numbers: how many permits, how much money, and which direction it's heading.

Permit counts

The number of new construction and renovation permits filed in your area, broken out by residential and mixed-use activity — the most direct signal of how much building is actually happening.

Filed permit value

Permit counts alone don't tell you scale — a handful of large projects can represent more investment than dozens of small ones. BuildSignal aggregates the filed valuations from each permit to show the total dollar figure behind the activity in your area.

Trend over time

BuildSignal compares current-period activity and filed value against the prior quarter, so you can see whether an area is accelerating or slowing rather than just looking at a single snapshot.

Frequently asked questions

Does BuildSignal predict future construction?

No — it reports on permits already filed. It doesn't forecast or guarantee future activity.

Does a high permit value always mean more units being built?

Not necessarily — filed value reflects the scale of investment behind a project, which can mean fewer, larger, or more expensive builds rather than simply more units. Permit counts and filed value are best read together, not as substitutes for each other.

Can I see trend data further back than one quarter?

The quarter-over-quarter comparison is the current trend view; longer historical trend ranges are a natural extension as more permit history accumulates in the product.
